2015 Scholarship Recipients

In 2003, the members and board of directors of the Florida Frontiersmen organization voted to reach out to their local community in the form of a scholarship program.  Since its inception, 89 scholarships totaling $44,500 have been given to local college bound graduating seniors in the Bartow and Fort Meade area. Children of club members have also been eligible to apply. Our members recognize that with any organization, its future lies with the next generation. With the Florida Frontiersmen, we also hold on to the hope that the lessons of our country’s history remain alive and well within each new generation. So there is a history component to our scholarship requirements.Scholarships consist of $500 each and are made as a deposit to the student’s college account. The Florida Frontiersmen annually raise funds for this program through the following methods:

  • Fees paid by parents, teachers and chaperones who attend the Alafia River Rendezvous Thursday’s School Day
  • Profits generated through the sale of fire wood during the ten days of the Alafia River Rendezvous
  • The Sunday morning Alafia River Rendezvous Church Service Offering
  • Annual Member Supported Scholarships:
    • Brantly Fulbright scholarship
    • Liam and Mali Larrow scholarship
  • Miscellaneous projects conducted throughout the year by the members of Florida Frontiersmen

To be eligible, the student must be a graduating senior from our local area with a grade point average of 2.5 or higher. They must have been accepted in an accredited two or four-year college, university, business or vocational school and, in addition, have performed community services. Other requirements are a transcript from their high school, a letter of recommendation from teacher, guidance counselor, or principal on school letterhead. Our committee requires a written 300 word essay about the student and their goals. In addition, a written 100 word essay is also required about a pre-1840 historical event that had a personal impact on the student or their family.

Our Club motto is “More Majorum,” meaning after the manner of our ancestors. Are you are interested in helping students learn more about history?  We accept donations on behalf of the Florida Frontiersmen’s scholarship program. Because we are a 501(c)3, donations are tax deductible. Check here for specific requirements.
